Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground chicken or turkey sausage
  • 6 slices day-old bread, cubed (about 4 cups)
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon dried mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground chicken or turkey sausage and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat and set aside.
  3. Spread the cubed bread evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  4. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese over the bread cubes, followed by the cooked sausage.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, dried mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, cheese, and sausage in the baking dish. Gently press down on the bread with a spatula to ensure it is fully submerged in the egg mixture.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the casserole.
  8. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the casserole is set in the center and the cheese is melted and bubbly, with golden edges.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, if desired.

Notes

Prepare this casserole the night before by assembling all ingredients and refrigerating it overnight. Simply add 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.

For a richer flavor, use half-and-half or heavy cream instead of milk.

Consider adding sautéed vegetables like bell peppers, onions, or spinach to the casserole for extra flavor and nutrients.

Ensure the bread is slightly stale or day-old to prevent the casserole from becoming soggy.
